"...the bulk of the population is dreaming the same dream. It's a dream of wealth, power, fame, plenty of sex and exciting recreational opportunities" (Lasn, Common Culture, The Cult You're In 55).
This quote says quite a few things about American society and  the dream most of its members share. First of all, if the bulk of the population is dreaming the same dream than it is statistically immpossible for all of them to achieve that dream because there can only be so much of the "resources" they all desire. There is enough money to go around, but probably not enough to satisfy everyone's dreams. It doesn't shed a very positive ligh on our society as a whole when our greatest dreams consist only of having money, power, being famous, sex, and exciting activities. It mentions nothing about wishing to have good character or being intelligent or anything that isn't superficial on some level. Notice that the dream is for plenty of sex, not love or a healthy, stable relationship. It is pretty obvious that quality isn't as important as appearances and money in this country.
Below are examples of people who have achieved the dream most of America is dreaming.
Power
Everyone can have a run in with the law no matter how powerful they are or how much money they have!
Fame
A powerful man who had plenty of sex.
One of the most revered faces of power.
What do all these people have in common? With their power and fame comes wealth, plenty of sex, and  exciting recreational opportunities. This seems to imply that all the elements of this dream will fall into place when one is achieved. This isn't necessarily true, because not all wealthy people are famous and the same is true for some of the other parts of this dream. In this country though, if you have wealth you can basically buy everything else.
If a person realizes all these basic dreams they share with most of the country will they then proceed to attain knowledge, character, and love? Or is the realization of the dream enough to satisfy the average person to the point where they are no longer motivated to strive for anything else? I suppose it depends on the person themselves and if they need a new goal to keep on living. I personally hope if I ever attain ridiculous wealth, power, and fame that it doesn't mean I'm screwed if there's an afterlife!
