A secluded village sleeps in the midday sun.  There is a war in progress elsewhere but the village is so rural that it has not affected them so far until a group of  soldiers arrive.  Their orders are to keep a low profile so they look for quarters and are joined by a young boy soldier who has been sent from headquarters and isnt aware of the unit's past history.  Against orders, he meets and falls in love with a local girl. A dance is held for the visitors but one of the villagers is raped by a soldier and the victim picks up a knife and gets her retirbution by killing one of the officers.   Enquiries are begun to find the offender but no-one will tell so the commander decides to seize all the food in the village to loosen their tongues.  He isn't prepared for what happens to human nature when people become really, really hungry ...
