TYCHO BRAHE |
||||||||
A Danish astronomer, Tycho Brahe is best known in the field of astronomy for making the most accurate measurements of the motions of the planets in the solar system at that time. This was before the invention of the telescope and given the crudeness of the instruments he used, this is quite remarkable. In fact his calculations were so accurate that Johannes Kepler would use them as the basis for developing his Laws of Plan- etary motion. Brahe considered himself a bit of an aristocrat and astronomy a noble profession; quite often associating with royalty. An interesting sidelight is that he lost the tip of his nose in a swordfight and had a gold one made to replace it and wore it proudly. Brahe died of a ruptured bladder in 1601. |
