MY POINT OF VIEW | ||||||||||||
MYTHOLOGY | ||||||||||||
I was thinking just the other day about how myth permeates our lives. Just about everywhere we turn we are confronted with some kind of myth that tries to invade our minds and influence us. Whether it is organized religion, eternal love, or Santa Claus; we are surrounded day to day by different mythologies. Usually when we think of myths we think of the ancient Greek or Roman myths and think about how they make good stories, but of course they could never be true. Why is it we know for certain that the gods of Greek or Roman mythology are false and yet we wish to maintain that the god or gods of the Bible are in every way, shape or form the real deal? Why is it that Christians scoff wholeheartedly at the other religions in the world; knowing that they could not possibly be true, and yet they view their own religion as the ultimate in truth. I believe myths exist in other areas of our life, too. They can range from different ways we perceive the world to marriage. I know you might be wondering how could marriage be considered a myth, but with a divorce rate that is at least 50%, I don't know what other state you could consider marriage to be in. Everyone of these 50% that get divorced stood before "GOD" and proclaimed that they would love, honor and cherish and yet; why are our families falling apart? Is it that people really belive in the myth of eternal love or are they just hypocrites? I read some study recently that said divorce among churchgoing Christians was higher than those that claimed no religious affiliation at all. I do not claim to know the answer to this problem other than for people to "say what they mean, and mean what they say". I think no other behavior is proper. Go ahead and believe what you will. Just believing in something does not necessarily make it true. I can believe there are purple and pink baby elephants dancing on my lawn, but that doesn't make it true. What is truth and what is myth? That's what I'm trying to find out and I invite you to come along for the ride. |
