Several large storm systems have been spotted on Neptune including one called the Great Dark Spot. Winds high in the atmosphere blow at several hundreds of miles per hour. Because of Pluto's irregular orbit, there are times when  Neptune is the most distant planet from the sun. This last occurred from 1979 to 1999.
