When Lister emerges from stasis, he is in for a bit of a shock. Holly tells him that everybody else on board is dead, having been subjected to a lethal dose of Cadmium 2 radiation, caused by a drive plate being ineffiently repaired. Lister's initial inability to fully accept this news causes Holly to ponder whether he actually made the correct move in letting Lister out of stasis at all. The next piece of news Lister receives is even more startling: he has been in stasis for three million years. And he's still got that library book. As he sits in the Drive Room, looking at the piles of white dust that once constituted the crew, he surveys his current situation. Everybody's dead; including his beloved Krissie Kochanski, who, although she didn't know it, was a major player in Lister's plan. She was going to wear a white dress and ride the horses. He's three million years into Deep Space, and totally alone. Or so he thinks, until Rimmer enters the Drive Room: sporting a large letter 'H' on his forehead. |
