Chapter 3 “When did you decide to hold on to your virginity?” she asked
him without preamble. They had been sitting in his conservative luxury vehicle, heading down the highway to the restaurant
Hawthorne had so carefully chosen when Dory had apparently decided, out of
the blue, to drop this question. “I love women, if that’s what you’re getting at. I have no
difficulty with the idea of sex. I am quite open-minded about it, in fact, so
long as Biblical standards are maintained. However, I chose to avoid women in
general because the ones who seemed to like me only ended up caring for my
money or my name.” She scoffed. “Your name?” Nodding, still tolerant of her
rudeness, he said, “Yes, they seem to think it’s poetic or charming. I think,
however, that it’s more of a hindrance than a help in the romantic
department.” She seemed to think this over. “Agreed. You’re nothing like the
descriptions of Nathaniel Hawthorne, and I do not imagine that there is much romance
in you, at all.” “I’m apparently coming across as rude and tactless. Yes, I can
believe that. You see, it’s been said of me all my life.” She waved a hand in
his direction. “It’s also been said of you, by the way. So, what’s so
difficult about it? You’re just the same type of person. Is it more
offensive, somehow, because I’m female?” |
