Chapter 13

Back at their hotel room, Dory was exhausted but happy. “Hawthorne, Dear,” she said, “you did wonderfully.” She placed her hand on his cheek and told him, “I’m about as happy as I can be tonight.” Then, with a frown on her face, she asked quickly, “Did you give the pastor your office number or your personal cell phone?” With a grin, he said sheepishly, “Well, actually, I gave him yours. I had cards printed up for you and they arrived yesterday. I had been intending to give them to you this evening, but then the trip to church came up and I forgot until that very moment.”

Dory didn’t reply. She simply sat, eyes shining. It would be lovely to provide a baby for a family. Or an older child, if that’s what they wanted. Since news of the loss that Steven Curtis Chapman had experienced, Dory had begun to feel differently about parenthood.

It was funny, actually. Dory had always expected to go childless, but after finding out she would die before she might ever have a baby, a motherly instinct had been birthed her. She didn’t know what to do with it, since it was so obviously not going to happen. With a sigh, she decided to pray about it and ask God what he was up to, because this certainly looked like some of his doing.

Later, she spoke to Hawthorne about it. He had been seated in front of a low white coffee table typing on a small laptop computer. When she peeked over his shoulder, she realized he was purchasing tickets to a theater performance on Broadway that week. She didn’t want to spoil his fun, but she simply was not ready to leave Puerto Rico.

“Hawthorne,” she murmured as she placed a hand on his shoulder, “What do you think of staying here instead of visiting New York? I’ve already been there twice, and well, it’s quite an experience, but not the one I’m longing for. Right now, lying around and simply enjoying our time together sounds like the most fun.” With a grin, he shut the laptop and faced her. “Okay, then. It’s funny, those tickets were nonrefundable and I’ve been praying about this schedule, so obviously, God wanted me to buy them, and maybe I was supposed to give them away.

In an instant, Dory thought of the sweet middle aged couple that had opened up their church to them. How often would they have the chance to visit New York? By the look of their car and the lady’s bad dental work, they couldn’t afford much of anything, and yet the Lord had gifted them with vision and gentle hospitality.

“What do you think of the pastor and his wife? You could pay their way to New York and give them a vacation. We could even help them line up some preaching engagements if he’s uncomfortable with simply getting away from it all.” With a grin, Hawthorne flipped open his cell phone. “Perfect! I’ll get right on it.”

Hawthorne had never been an easygoing man. In fact, though he was good and honest, he had always tended to lead those around him. Yet, Dory was doing something new to his heart. An old dog was learning new tricks, he realized, and he sort of liked it.

“That’ll be fine. Yes, and get them outerwear for the trip. New York isn’t too cold these days, but after the tropics, they’re going to be a little uncomfortable if they don’t have something warmer. Sweaters, yes. And anything else you think they’ll need.” Following the conversation, Dory caught Hawthorne’s eye and whispered to him. “Yes, that’s good! Also, provide them with gift cards specifically for New York shops, not cash. And provide a car, but not a limo. If we give them money, they’ll end up saving it to give to missions. This trip is about having fun. We’ll take care of their missions’ budget without cutting into their vacation.”

Dory had always wanted to travel and she had been interested in the lives of famous people and rich magnates for years. Yet, now that the world was literally her oyster, all she wanted was quiet and rest. She didn’t feel sick, but she longed for the silence of an empty room with nothing but her husband’s arms to hold her. She had a feeling God was going to use this time of rest to accomplish more than all their hectic travels had done until now.
