Craving anime or j-pop music? Tune in to Kawaii-radio!

The year was 1999. I had just finished my freshman year at BGSU. It was summer. I was bored. I stumbled across a show on Cartoon Network called Dragonball Z. Maybe you've heard of it. If you have... you probably know what happened next. Hi. My name's Charlotte, and I'm an otaku. My anime addiction began with DBZ, but it didn't end there. No, DBZ was simply a gateway drug. From DBZ and Sailor Moon (which was on before DBZ in the Toonami timeslot on Cartoon Network), I moved on to other shows... first Outlaw Star, then Gundam Wing and Cowboy Bebop... and with the exception of Sailor Moon and Tenchi Muyo, every anime series Cartoon Network showed on Toonami, I liked. When Cartoon Network began their Adult Swim program (where I originally encountered Cowboy Bebop), it was the beginning of the end for me. But it was moving to Pittsburgh, a city large enough to have video stores specializing in anime rentals, that sealed my fate in 2002. Through Starbase One I tried both Ranma 1/2 and Trigun. Trigun (and Trigun's Nicholas D. Wolfwood) was worth admitting addiction to. Once I admitted my anime addiction, there was nothing holding me back.

Pocky is a Japanese snack--cookies dipped in chocolate or strawberry yogurt, etc. Many otaku branch out from a love of anime to an appreciation for Japanese culture in general, particularly the foods their favorite anime characters enjoy... like pocky!

My discovery of kazaa (the file-sharing program that has made my transformation into an otaku possible--thanks kazaa) and my attendance at anime conventions (particularly Tekkoshocon, the first con I ever went to, and the first I ever cosplayed at) allow me to continue to build my base of anime knowledge. My anime fandoms are such a part of my life now that I have trouble trying to separate them from the rest of my interests, fears, loves and worries that make me, well, ME.

For anyone wondering how they got lost on this strange page (i.e. non-otaku), I will offer a brief introduction to (and argument on behalf of) anime. Now that that's out of the way...
