Long I have wandered in the garden,
ever intent on sampling its exotic fruits
each and all.
Drawn to their beckoning hues,
enticed by their juicy ripeness,
I plucked the choicest ones within my reach
and fed,
savoring,
learning with each mouthful my emerging preferences,
recognizing that distinct balance of sweetness and tartness
in the nectar I sought,
the fine accord of succulence and firmness
in the flesh that met my demands,
made aware of hidden vitamins
that nourished my deficiencies,
and blessed to find all this in the offerings of a single tree.
Once this unique harmony became known to me,
became one with me,
no other fruit can sate my cravings;
hunger exists solely to want the One,
mouth opens only to eat of the One,
tongue searches for naught but the taste of the One.
And while I am pleased to be surrounded
by the competing fragrances and brilliant blossoms
that make this garden a paradise,
I will not stray from this one tree
that blooms with my delight,
lest its branches lift away from me
and deny me my sustenance.
