3 Days in Atoka was the name of the event, another of the huge music festivals which had been making the Texas summers even hotter in the Seventies, only this one was held across the Red in Oklahoma. The Roadtoad and I supposed that just as many or more Texans had crossed the border as there were locals who showed up, and cultural observers that we were, we sought a way to quickly tell the Texas gals from the Okies. The two tribes dressed pretty much the same (although them northerners seemed to favor starch over hippie patches for their jeans), but it was behavior we were interested in anyways, so I concocted a simple experiment of a common stimulus and polled responses: we’d pinch a girl on the butt, check her reaction, then ask her what state she was from. Well, my brothers, after going through a dozen or more subjects, dodging a few slaps and punches, and outrunning a charging, snorting, swinging cowgirl, it turned out that without exception, this is the rule, now a natural law of the Southwest: When pinched on the bottom from behind, an Oklahoma girl will spin around with fist clenched to clobber whoever the trespasser is on her back forty, while in the same situation, a Texas girl will turn around in amused wonder to see who’s doing the pinching before she makes up her mind. |
