Autumn With Father Remembered

We drove away
entire Sundays
just to see
the historic
waterwheel

(Do you go there still,
get out and gather
leaves whose colors you
may never match
on canvas?)

Then we drove on,
following signs
to the Massachusetts
Turnpike
past old red barns
collapsed like lungs
