Poem for My Father 1. You showed me how to make a bow and arrow; where to stick the worm so it squirms on the hook like a whore; what to look for in coins. 2. I held on to the hose at the end of the day. The sun was a shiny penny in back of the trees. A fine cone of spray hissed out of the end of the hose. You made me afraid of my toes which wriggled like worms on the lawn. Death was the hum of the hose in my hand. 3. Father, the other day I sold the old money you gave me. My wife, the woman I want to be half of all my life, and I said we needed a child. Copyright (c) 2000 by Douglas Eichhorn << index >> |
