Christmas cards and Christmas red
Placed on a wall of white
Immediately enhance a room
As though the world's alight .
Candles too - so pure and white
With flickering flame of yellow
Form shadows new, which tremble too
In atmosphere so mellow.
Fir tree, deep green with sparkling lights
Where silver streamers swing,
Hides golden spheres, and candles bright
And Christmas bells that ring.
Santa Claus, snowmen, stockings red
Blue boxes wrapped in silver string,
Hang on by twirling slender threads
Changing colour as they swing.
Russet cones from autumn woods
Turquoise baubles fat and round
Sit in leafy branches dark, deep green
Not a metre from the ground.
