Today is the day for lovers
romance is in the air
Promises everlasting
of love forever shared ~
Whispers of sweet nothings,
a love that boldly shines,
Seeing a life together
until the end of time.
Caught up in the magic
the enchantment of the day
Making promises to last
despite come what may ~
But when things begin to go wrong
and push comes to shove,
A world that's full of lovers
just "fall out of love".
A magical illusion
that one can never see
That love is more than just a "feeling"
of desirable beauty ~
Forever is forever
and that is a long time
To live with that "one moment"
you made your Valentine.
So what happens to the lovers
after years gone by,
Who've gone down the road of marriage
who no longer want to try ~
Did their life become unhappy
leaving them unfulfilled,
As love became resentment
that fought a battle of wills.
What happened to the romance,
what happened to the love?
Their promises of forever
and all they had dreamed of?
And what about the magic
that they once used to share,
How can they let it all slip away
and forget they ever cared?
What, because their opinions differ,
because they argue who is right,
Because all they ever seem to do
is spit and curse and fight ~
They no longer hold the value
and they no more respect
The person they loved and cherished,
well, what did they expect?
Marriage is an eternal bond
of unconditional love,
Forever giving to one another
in sacrifice and love ~
Working hard to take the time
to understand each other,
No room for selfish attitudes
in this promise of forever.
Love is not demanding
desiring its own way,
For it never thinks first of itself
and it never fails to say ~
That the reality of true love
is patient and is kind,
It will endure and persevere
until the end of time.
So what of the promises lovers make
on this romantic day?
Caught up in the magic
emotions swept away ~
Do they have the best intentions
for their lives together,
But never realising what it means,
this promise of forever.
It takes two to make a marriage
and two to break apart
The promises of love they shared
once spoken from the heart ~
But it's easier to walk away
when the love just "disappears",
Than to work together with the hope
to overcome their fears.
So on this day for lovers
remember beyond all doubt
That love goes much far deeper
than what one thinks it's about ~
The promise of forever
until the end of time
Between two lovers, should always be
more than just Valentine's.

"This poem deals with the more serious side of love and romance....and goes beyond the magic of Valentine's Day. So many get caught up in the beautiful romance and enchantment of this day that they forget about the real committment it takes. I mean REALLY takes. I know there are people who are committed to their partners....but enough to sacrifice everything for them? To totally give yourself to them? To always be there for them through everything, regardless of the cost to you....because true love is selfless? What happens when the "magic dies"? What happens when a couple fall "out of love"? Can you fall out of love? I don't think so. You see, love is a choice. It is a choice we make to totally commit ourselves to one another. That doesn't mean that there are clauses that say "except for when we grow tired of each other" or "unless the magic disappears", and so forth. We choose who we love, and we choose how we love them. We don't fall out of love with them....we just don't "feel" the way we used to. But that doesn't mean we can't again. But so many people resign themselves to the fact their marriage will never get any better, and they give up and file for divorce. That's the easy way out. Marriage is a promise, a committment, a covenant between you, your partner and God (yes, even if you didn't get married in a church, because God designed marriage). Marriage requires such total committment beyond words, in complete giving to one another, selflessness and unity. It is hard work....very hard work. People say the first year of married life is the hardest....true, but it doesn't mean that the years after that are any easier either. Sometimes they get harder before they get easier. Marriage is a complete adjustment. It is learning more about one another, and learning ways how we can please and love our spouses more. The work in marriage never stops, and those who say that "it's just too hard" need to stop focusing on themselves and their needs.... I'm no expert on marriage. I've been divorced. But I also know the score. That isn't to say that spouses who are abused should stay with their partners ~ they shouldn't. But unless one's spouse has been abusive or unfaithful, then what grounds does one really have to end the committment they promised would be forever? They realised that forever is a long time.... This poem speaks of the forever kind of love....one that goes beyond the fantasy and romance of Valentine's. It was the way marriage was designed to be....for always. A forever kind of love."
