My Soldier , My Son

This man you see in uniform
Isn't just a man
He belongs to the U.S. Army
And he holds my heart in his hand
Once, not very long ago
It seems like yesterday
I held his hand as he learned to walk
And then he was on his way

Through kindergarten, junior high
Right through to graduation day
I held his hand as he took this walk
Learning about life as he made his way

The next time was different than before
For now he was a man
He made a choice to defend his country
But this time he let go of my hand

He's a soldier and he takes his job seriously
He knows the cost of freedom, he pays it everyday
His Christmas won't be spent at home
But in a land very far away

Instead of decorating a tree, he'll clean his gun
And dinner instead of being hot is taken on the run
But he wouldn't have it any other way, he'll risk his life if need be
My soldier, my son
I must have done something right for God to bless me with such a son.
