A Balancing Act

by Lou Wilson, January 2001, Writing a Villanelle Assignment

Playing the roles of wife, mother and teacher is my plight
Lying low, then secret friend, aven AKA, now and then
But, beneath these roles I am a woman of delight!

I'm a gal, not a sissy, I'm ready to fight!
No bikini, or mini, no eighty-proof martini. When
Fulfilling these roles, wife, mother, teacher is my plight.

Finished my chores, mapped my plan, it's fight not flight.
I'll toss out the script, write some new lines in
Confident now, I am a woman of delight!

I focus my energies, widen my sight
Forget repression heated passion's no sin!
Which role? Wife, mother , teacher is my plight.

He loves me, he loves me not? Forget the daisy, shine tonight
Cosmetic surgery...now blond... and thin
Despite these rules, I'm a woman of delight!

First pulled to the left, then dragged to the right
I'll balance this act, I'll make it a win!
Tho' being wife, mother and teacher is my plight
Through all these roles I am a woman of delight!
