Review

Another classic Chomsky book. The message is similar to that of Rogue State by William Blum. In this book, Chomsky examines how the
United States and its allies frequently violate the veryinternational laws that they claim to be defending, and how they flaunt the humanitarian
values which they claim to uphold. Not only does he expose the military violence of the West, he also denounces the economic violence
perpetrated on innocent populations, and which can cause equivalent damage to military actions. This arrogant dismissal of the United Nations
and international justice by the world’s lone superpower qualify it, in his eyes, for the role of "rogue state”. He reveals the dark side of everything
from the Marshall Plan to USAID to prove the hypocrisy behind apparently generous programmes. A useful remedy against the self-congratulatory
rhetoric of many Western leaders.
