• Introduction

Thanks God for all His blessings upon us!  Toastmasters Club has been around in Medan since 1998 and within this period of time, many individuals have been benefited from our Communication and Leadership programmes.

Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organisation, focusing in Communication and Leadership skills, was founded in October 1924 in Santa Anna, California, USA.  Through Toastmasters clubs, millions of people all over the world have been succeeded to conquer their fears of public speaking.

There are only three Toastmasters clubs in Medan at this present time.  However, we are planning to build more clubs in the near future so that more Medanese will have the opportunity to become professional public speakers through our “Learning by Doing” educational programme.

Looking from the number of attendance and our current progress, we are contented with our present progress and confidence in our well being in the future.  As a non-profit educational club, we are proud to serve the community who wishes to acquire public communication and leadership skills without going through formal system.  Going forward, we will put in extra efforts to open up more clubs that use not only English, but also Bahasa Indonesia and Mandarin so that there will be more future leaders and successful individual from Medan.

• Why Toastmasters?

E-mail. Voice mail. Fax. Cell phones.  Quick fixes for a complex activity: communication. Today’s work tools increase our efficiency but often decrease our effectiveness. When communication really counts we all fall back on the original solution: face-to-face conversation.  Toastmasters is the right choice for improving your speaking skills. We give you hands-on, face-to-face suggestions-for-improvement style communications training in a friendly environment.  You can’t find it anywhere else.  At Toastmasters you’ll learn to relax, plan, and present a terrific speech, whether you have 10 days to prepare or just 10 seconds. You’ll learn and practice in a friendly, comfortable environment with people who are there for the same reason you are to become better communicators.

At a Toastmasters meeting everybody talks that’s why you’re there! You’ll build “quick-thinking” skills as you present a one to two-minute impromptu speech during Table Topics. At a later meeting you may be the one asking the Table Topics questions ! Soon after, you’ll introduce speakers,
give prepared speeches, conduct the meeting and perform many other roles.

You’ll improve just by speaking regularly. But the key to the Toastmasters learn-by-doing program is constructive evaluation. An evaluator will be assigned to you each time you give a prepared speech. Your evaluator will point out your presentation’s strengths and offer suggestions for improving your next speech. At first you’ll be recognized for your effort; later you’ll be recognized for you skills.
