Bill Poole's Trip to the
Republic of South Africa

Day 11
Monday, 9-Nov-98

Just when I thought it was safe to go in the water.........

I heard a story about a lady driving from her home in a poor part of Jo'burg around 4 PM, (daylight) Sunday.

She was either stopped or slowed at a robot (that's what they call traffic lights out here) talking on her GSM (that's what they call cell phones out here) when she heard a loud bang and found herself covered with window glass, immediately, someone reached in through the now-missing driver window and grabbed the cellphone. The bad guy took the phone and ran. Leaving her unharmed and leaving her purse and some other items that could have been reached. Apparently this happens a lot.

Someone told me that a hard striking tool like a spark-plug in the fist is used to open windows.

Apparently, there is a whole generation of people here who grew up during the "stuggle" and boycotted school and cheered whenever someone had a burning gas-soaked tire "necklace" strung around their neck and who now have no job skills and no value for human life or the rights of others.

Other than that, it has so far been pretty much a typical day at work.

Went out to dinner with 5 colleagues of mine, Me, a white South African, a guy from europe here on business, and 3 black Africans from other african countries. We went to Villamoura, probably the best restaurant in all of Johanessburg. Portuguese food is GOOD!!!! It was mostly seafood (when I see food, I eat it) I had something made out of fish, the waiter had to tell me repeatedly and finally write down that it was Steenbass.
