A BIT OF HISTORY

Del Will Mole

welcome to Mole Hill!
Del started songwriting after getting a guitar and some lessons for his 10th birthday... first live performance of a home grown song was in a talent show at Butlins as a duo with brother John....... later to join up with singer lyricist Eddie Cook to form ARTIFICIAL MOVEMENT an experimental synth band, reel to reel tape loops were used due to the high cost of drum machines in the early 1980's.. (an early form of sampled loops...........) synth loops were also created to fill in for the absence of sequencers, which were both expensive , unstable and came with a telephone directory of how to use instructions....... Yep, those Roland sh09's and 101's were played by hand....., not forgetting my first synth... an octave kitten ...wooden and covered in knobs....very unstable oscillators which needed retuning every 5 minutes or so , ...............such fun...
Eddie left in favour of plumbing and a nice young lady, leaving Del and john a week to write a sets worth of songs for a gig the following week....... thanks to an early Yamaha music computer and matching drum machine linked via midi for the first time , and a canvas of real world samples, effected with every possible effect box we owned, in amongst half a dozen or so rock bands, the crowd was rather baffled at how to dance to what was the domain of kraftwork at the time..........
Del became rhythm guitarist and john soundman for one of the rocky bands playing that day, CATCH 22..... and though only a hard tune called fishermen was ever used of his own, playing alternate rhythms altered the hard rock to , well something else......... after many gigs here there and everywhere, they made a singe on 7" vinyl."freeway to paradise / truth conquers all...... later to be altered to "the U's conquer all" whilst dressing in Colchester united kits to appear on about Anglia...... only the singer supported them......
Catch 22 drifted apart in the late 1980's and Del unable to find anyone remotely musical started experimenting with PC sequencers , and collecting equipment for a  studio......
Ill fated before it could pay for itself as hopes were dashed by a burglary wiping out years of work, and to add insult to injury the insurers decided most of it was high risk and not covered..........and it hasn't ended yet, as the pc's with my accounts were also stolen the tax man still commeth……. Be they thieves who creep in at night in stripey cloths and swag bags ..."outlaws…"or the men in suits and bowler hats who make up their own rules and laws,  Politicians or  not, they all seek to have more money than they need just for the sake of it and the supposed power  and authority that it can buy………………..    Justice on this planet is a commodity , have they already floated it on the stock market?????    How about  "Prince John.com"…………………………..     So where is Robin Hood?????????
Ah well ,  remember the proverb…."it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter heaven……………………"
Enter soft samplers and softsynths......... all that is small enough to hide, and yet ..... this new technology was far from the old unstable octave kittens........ download some mp3's and enjoy!  Oh and record companies…  give me a break!!!!!!!!
