Advantages

  • Well-placed bishops, defended solidly by the pawns, and a possible Bb2 should not be discounted, but looked into seriously.
  • Twinned Knights placed nicely, and able to select from a variety of destinations and strategies to trouble the opponent.
  • The "Pop Soda" is so named because compressed position of the minor pieces, ready to pop out into the attack with the release of the proper cap.

Disadvantages

  • The packed position allows the opponent to select and terminate specific targets.
  • The usual QGD variation leaves d4 stuck for quite awhile, and Bc3 is ineffective as a result.
  • The a-pawn is weak, and the resultant Queenside may take some time to adjust into an optimum position.

Move Sequence
  1. d4. The Queen's Pawn Opening.
  2. c4. Standard Queen's Gambit. Trade when declined.
  3. e3. Defending d4
  4. Bd2. Looking for...
  5. Bc3. An unusual spot for this Bishop
  6. Bd3. Curious, but effective against h7.
  7. Nd2. Against the enemy coming to c4 or e4.
  8. Qc2. Further pressure on h7.
  9. 0-0-0. Quickly, before the attack starts.
  10. Ne2. f3 will deflect the Bishop pin.
  11. h3. Preventing Bg4-Bh5, and the subsequent trouble.
  12. A tight lie that has the potential to develop into a full-scale assault on Black's Kingside if allowed to.

Pitfalls
Throughout the entire opening sequence, black can give white trouble with these moves:
  • Bb4 forces the Bishop trade, taking out half of your double-barreled attack
  • e4 blocks the diagonal thrust on Black's kingside
  • Ba6 or Bb7 fires a stern warning against White's under-manned Kingside
