| When Gus Van Sant was casting his remake of Psycho, it's unfortunate that he didn't give Jeremy Davies a shot. The gawky, solemn-faced Davies was all but meant to play the 90's incarnation of gawky, solemn-faced Norman Bates, but Van Sant decided to go with the more audience-friendly Vince Vaughn. What a shame--it would have been a much better movie if he chose Davies. After working on TV and on General Hospital, Davies was cast in 1994's Spanking the Monkey. Critics and audiences were alternately impressed with and grossed out by Davies' performance as Ray Aibelli, an awkward teenager who develops an uncomfortably close relationship with his middle-aged mother. His role in the film led to other impressive performances in independent films like The Locusts and the not-as-bad-as-its-name Going All the Way. Sadly, his performances in each film were overshadowed by co-stars Vince Vaughn and Ben Affleck. Davies finally reached mass audiences when he was cast as the cowardly Corporal Upham in Saving Private Ryan. Director Steven Spielberg's decision to shoot the film from Upham's point of view finally gave Davies the exposure he deserved. Since then, he's been working steadily in The Million Dollar Hotel, Up at the Villa, and Ravenous, in which he uttered the immortal line "HE WAS LICKING ME!!" |
