YOUR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
FROM AL
"And make no mistake about it. The big drug companies, who are charging seniors more than anybody else even though their profits are higher than any other industry, and the insurance companies and HMOs who are opposed to a Patients’ Bill of Rights, even though it is hurting the quality of medical care for Americans, both of those industries are supporting my opponent... And they are financing a massive advertising campaign that is calculated to try to mislead you into thinking that up is down and inside is outside and right is wrong. So pass the word from person to person... from one to one to one, to get the truth of this matter out there. The drug companies, the insurance companies, the HMOs, the oil companies and others, they have a priority in this election, and it is to make sure that your voice is diluted by their money and power and influence." Vice President Gore in Detroit, October 14, 2000
THIS TIME, WE ARE THE SILENT MAJORITY
But we can't afford to be silent any longer! There are four things we all need to do, in order to make sure our voices have the final say in this election.
1.) Volunteer to work a Democratic phone bank: Make some spare time and spend it calling registered Democrats, reminding them to vote. It sounds corny, but it works. And we need everybody in the voting booth this time around.
2.) Attend any Democratic rallies in your area: The larger and more vocal the crowd, the greater the chance the rally will get covered by the media. Paint yourself Gore/Lieberman blue, scream "Go Al, Go!" at the least provocation, laugh like it’s the funniest thing ever when the Vice President tells you how boring he is. Give heart to the rest of the silent majority - - and scare the Corporate Media senseless. (To find out where and when rallies will be held, subscribe to Gore 2000 Campaign Updates at algore.com.)
3.) Volunteer to help get out the vote on election day: All of America needs Al Gore and a Democratic Congress, but the citizens most in need are the poor and the elderly, who often have no way to get to the polls. Take a day off of work and drive them. The Republicans will be doing the same thing, but they don’t have as many potential volunteers as we do. That’s a fact. Drive the Republicans crazy - - drive a Democrat to the polls.
4.) Tell everybody you know why you're voting for Al Gore and the Democrats: I don’t mean just the two or three political junkies you know. I mean everybody. Absolutely everybody you know personally. And tell them face to face, not on the phone, not via email. Tell them in person, tell them in detail. Tell them with conviction, with purpose and with pride. This is what’s going to win the election.
What makes me say that?
Our biggest enemy is not George W. Bush, or the Republican Party, or even the Corporate Media. Our biggest enemy is voter apathy. It is not true that all politicians are corrupt, that individuals don’t count, that voting is meaningless. These ideas are Right Wing propaganda designed to keep as many people as possible out of the voting booth. There are more registered Democrats in America than registered Republicans. Historically, low voter turnout always favors the Republicans. The more people who vote in this election, the less likely it is that Bush will win.
This is my personal experience: when you speak about this election to someone who knows you, face to face, you conquer voter apathy. When you speak from your convictions, you personalize this election. You let your listener know their choice is not between Suit #1 and Suit #2, or between Idiot Boy and the Stepford Wonk. You make it "I was out of work for 3 years because of Reaganomics, and George W. Bush wants us to go back there?" You make it "In fifty years the polar ice caps will have melted unless Al Gore gets a chance to stop it!" You make it "I'm voting for Al Gore because he can be trusted to keep his word." You make it real. You make it matter.
Go Green or Go Gore?
Originally in this space I advocated "strategic voting" – voting for Gore where in states where the race is tight and voting for Nader in states where the race is a forgone conclusion.
Since Nader has broken his promise to only run in states that could not effect the election, since Nader claims there is no difference between the two major candidates but has come out strongly in favor of a Bush win, since Nader is attacking Gore and sparing Bush, since Nader is accepting GOP soft money ads, I can no longer endorse strategic voting.
I have a tremendous amount of respect for individual Greens. There are Green politicians holding local and state offices in my neck of the woods who do a world of good. Due to Nader’s actions, however, I feel I can never endorse a Nader candidacy again. I feel I can never contribute to any group he advocates.
This is a harsh response, I know. Nader has the right to try and run his campaign any way he sees fit. I have a right to refuse to support him because of it.
I’m with "The Nation". Nader deserves "Not One Vote". Not one. Ever.
NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL GOOD PEOPLE TO COME TO THE AID OF THEIR PARTY
