Pulling down the old lath and plaster ceilings was a dirty job. Over 100 years of coal dust, soot from the trains, and dust all collected above the ceiling. The lath had been installed with 1-inch square nails. We removed the dining room and front bedroom ceilings. Two other rooms had lowered ceiling in good shape and the hall and front parlor had some new sheetrock from the 1960s with texturing. That was put on the schedule as a later project to change. The black sweater and cap were not black to begin with.

This house had cedar shake roof shingles which allows homes in humid climates to breath. However, it also allowed permeation of coal dust and coal soot. Homes closer to the railroad tracks half a block away had tin roofs to protect them from flying sparks given off by steam locomotives.
