Adenovirus

- a family of more than 40 viruses that cause infection

- incubation
- After illness fades away, the virus persists in in tonsils, adenoids, and other lymph tissue. They continue to reproduce constantly and slowly.

- infections of the eyes, upper respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal system

- shortly prior to and for the duration of the active disease
- prevention
- frequent hand washing, but there is no way to completely prevent adenoviral infections
- treatment
- no specific antiviral available; cidofovir has shown promise in the treatment of adenoviral ocular infections
