Hello, and welcome to "Primitive Designs by Bernie". My name is Bernie; me and my best friend Buster Brown (you can click on his name if you want to see a picture of him at work.) live in a tiny township outside Burnsville, North Carolina named Low Gap. Burnsville is home to world-renowned artisans, including potters, sculpturess, wood workers, and glass blowers. These artists have open studios and allow visitors to view there work at these galleries
My home also serves as my studio and is where I display furniture and home accessories in the living room, upstairs bedroom, kitchen and around the fireplace.
I can craft anything you want just give me a description or a photograph and I will design it to your specifications. I work with Mt. Laurel, Rhododendron, Smoke Vine and Recycled Barn Wood in the handcrafting of Rustic Stick Furniture (primitive and fine finish), Bird Houses, Plant Stands, Window Boxes, Baskets and more. Below is a sample of what I have done.
All my crafts are completely handmade by me. I use Mountain Laurel, Rhododendron and Smoke Vine all of which are obtained from the Appalachian Mountains, where I live. The wood is obtained (re-claimed) in a forest friendly way. Smoke Vine is an uncommon plant which grows only at an altitude of around 3,100 feet and above. Smoke Vine gets its name from its fireplace or campfire aromatic character. Mountain Laurel and Rhododendron are extremely heavy and hard woods and grow in peculiar shapes making them excellent for my stick furniture. They are also very weather resistant and do not require any protection or sealer.
