Chapter 1

“Janessa hurry you’re but up we’re gonna be late!” Lacey hollered from downstairs.

“Be right there.” Janessa ran down the stairs finding an impatient Lacey waiting at the bottom for her.

“See look, here I am.” Ness smiled.

“Good now hurry, tonight’s the night Ness, tonight I’m gonna tell Eric how much I love him.” Lacey smiled a dreamy smile.

“That’s my girl, I knew you guys were serious, but I didn’t know it was that serious.” Janessa smiled.

“Oh yeah, I can’t believe how much I love him. Are we almost there? Our reservations are for 7.” Lace looked down at her watch nervously.

“Yup, about a block left.” Ness smiled.

Janessa and Lacey were going on a double date with Lacey’s boyfriend Eric and a mutual friend of Eric’s. They’d been friends for years and now shared an apartment together while they attended school at a local college.

“Oh isn’t that just pathetic? Two people suckin face like that in public? It just disgusts me.” Lacey rolled her eyes at the couple who were across the street makin out.

“Um, Lace, I don’t want to worry you, but isn’t that Eric?” Janessa asked cautiously.

“WHAT? Are you serious?” Lacey stared out the window, stomach in knots.

“I don’t know but it looks a lot like him.”

“I’m gonna kill him.” Lacey opened her door and slammed it shut and stomped across the street.

“Excuse me,” she interrupted them.

“Can’t you see we’re a lil bit busy here?” the girl retorted snobbishly.

“Yeah, go away.” The boy stated showing his face.

“FUCK YOU ERIC! I fucking trusted you and you fucking cheat on me? What the hell are you doing here?!” Lacey screamed seeing who it was.

“Uh, Lacey, what are you doing here?” Eric questioned nervously.

“That’s what I want to know, I mean hello reservations, date, but obviously you forgot between fucking sessions with this bimbo.” Lacey screamed face turning crimson red.

“I hate you Eric, I thought I loved you but boy was I wrong. I hope I never see you again. May you rot in hell.”

Without waiting for his reaction Lacey turned and ran back to the car. “Let’s get the hell out of here.”

“I’m drivin babe.” Janessa took the keys from her.

“Whatever.” Lacey slammed the door and broke down sobbing. “Why did this happen to me. It’s always happening to me. I hate guys, from here on out I don’t want anything to do with them. This isn’t fair.”

“Sorry Lace. Is there anywhere in particular you wanna go?” Ness asked.

“Take me to the Lake Shore.” Lacey sniffed.

“That’s a long drive dear. That’s all the way in Tampa.” Ness reminded her.

“Just take me home then.”

Janessa felt bad for her best friend. She was hurting and there was nothing she could do for her.
“I’m here for ya girl.” Ness smiled at her.

“Thanks Janessa. I appreciate it.” Lace attempted a smile
.
They arrived home a few minutes later and Lacey went up to her room. She changed into some comfy pajamas and went to talk to Ness.

“I just can’t believe this happened. Why me huh ? This always happens to me. I always attract the losers.” Lacey cried.

“He’s out there Lacey, you just have to find him.” Ness consoled her.

“But it hurts too much. I’m 20 years old and I’ve already been hurt twice. I can’t do it again Ness. I won’t.”

When Lacey was a junior in high school the most popular guy in school asked her to prom. Lacey was excited but turns out he only did it so he could get her alone in the car. He raped and abused her then got away scott free. To this day Lacey still hasn’t recovered fully.

“What Ty did to you was not you’re fault Lacey, you didn’t know it was gonna happen.” Ness reprimanded her.

“Yes it was, I should have known something was up. Nobody asks me out. I’m just an ugly waist of space.” She cried helplessly.

“Lacey Dawn Jensen I don’t want to hear another word out of you about that. You are not, I repeat NOT an ugly waist of space. You are my best friend and I love you as my own sister. In fact you’re the only sister I’ve ever had.” Janessa hugged Lacey comforting her the best she could.

“Thanks Janessa, I love you too.” She smiled faintly.

“Good, now that’s what I like to see.” Ness smiled back.

“I think after finals next week I’m gonna go up to the place in Tampa and just get away.” Lacey sighed.

“I think that’s a good idea. You need to get away from here. If you want I can join you sometime.” Janessa suggested.

“That’d be cool.”

“Alright I’ll talk to the boss tomorrow.” Ness smiled.

“Cool, well I’m gonna turn in, all this cryin makes a person sleepy.” Lacey yawned.

“Night homes.”

“Night Sherlock.”

Janessa chuckled when she heard that. It was a thing they always did, Ness would say homes and Lacey would reply with Sherlock. Sherlock and Holms together forever.  She sighed, thinking about Lace and that creep Eric. ‘I never did trust him.’ She sighed and went up to bed.

The next week went by really fast for the girls, they had studied up to their ears for finals and felt very confident when they’d taken them.

“I’m gonna miss you chica. I can’t believe Becker won’t let me off til next month. Please call me when you get there ok?” Janessa sighed putting the last of Lacey’s luggage in her car.

“Thanks hun I will. I just can’t wait to just lie there for ages and never get up. I wish you could come sooner. I’m gonna be lonely without you.” Lacey pouted leaning up against her car.

“I’ll be there before you know it. But you gotta get goin before it gets too late.”

Lacey sighed and got into her car.

“Miss ya homes.”

“Miss ya Sherlock.”

Lacey smiled at Ness then took off for her long needed vacay.

“I won’t let you win Eric, I’m stronger then that.” Lacey laughed when Stronger came on the radio just as she said that.

The trip was long, boring, and very uneventful. Lacey finally reached her house at about 4:30. She got all her unpacking done then went to the store for supplies. After that she put on a jogging outfit and went outside. Just across the channel that ran between the houses was the most beautiful house she’d ever seen. It was a white 2 story house with a black fence around the whole property. The grass was a lush green and it was well kept up, whoever lived there must be rich.

Walkin outside she decided to go jogging along the beach. She started out with a brisk walk but as the memories came upon her she began to run faster. She’d ran at full kilter for about 20 minutes before collapsing onto the beach and screaming, ‘I WILL NOT LET YOU GET TO ME.’

Bursting into tears again she huddled into a ball and cried herself into a deep sleep.

“BJ I’m glad we finally got to spend some time together.” Adam told her.

“Oh I know, it seems like we’re always going going going.” BJ sighed kicking the sand around beneath her feet.

“I love you.” Adam smiled.

“Oh Adam I love you too.” BJ looked up at him, getting caught in his eyes.

They kept walking along the beach just happy to be together.

“Hey what’s that?” BJ asked seeing something on the sand a few yards ahead.

“Looks like a someone.” Adam observed.

“Wake up.” BJ said trying to wake up the girl.

“Mmm” Lacey mumbled.

“Hello…” BJ tried again.

Lacey opened her eyes and looked up, “Where am I.”

“You must have fell asleep on the beach, cuz u did, and here you are.” BJ smiled.

“Oh, damn. I don’t even think I know where I am, I just kinda started running.” Lacey said sitting up.

“Well we were just heading back, you’re welcome to walk with us, I live a ways back. Maybe you’ll recognize you’re surroundings.” BJ offered.

“Thanks. I think I’ll have to take you up on that offer. Sorry if I’m interrupting anything.” Lacey sighed.

The trio had been walkin for about half an hour when they stopped for a few minutes.

“Does anything look familiar yet ?” Adam asked.

“Yeah, I’m almost there. See the big house over there with the gate? I live right across the water, on this side.” Lacey answered.

“Really?! Oh my gosh we’re neighbors!” BJ stated excitedly. “Well almost.”

“Where do you live?” Lace wondered.

“In the big house right across the water.”

“You live there? Damn it’s a nice house. It’s very beautiful.” Lacey looked at her in wonder.

You should come over sometime, we could hang out or something.” BJ smiled.

“I’d like that.” Lace returned her smile.

“Awesome, here I have a pen in my pocket let me get you’re phone number.”

“I don’t have my phone hooked up yet but my cell number is 562-9856.

“Cool, we better get goin before mom starts worryin, mothers you know.” BJ sighed.

“Yeah, nice meeting you.” Lacey smiled.

After they left it was about 8:30, Lacey realized she hadn’t called Ness yet.

“Hello?”

“Sorry I didn’t call earlier.” Lace apologized.

“Oh hey it’s ok. You called didn’t you. Well I gotta go sorry I’m expectin someone. Later homes.”

“Later Sherlock.”

Lacey hung up the phone and sighed. She watched some tv but ended up going to bed early on the account of sleepiness.

“Goodnight world.” She smiled knowing everything was gonna be alright.
