OFFICER MIKE
I DO MY 8 AND HIT THE GATE
THE ERROR OF 'NON-INVOLVEMENT' THINKING
You aren't interested in protecting children, you are interested in vilifying correctional personnel.
Mike.
From: Kay Lee
You know, Mike, you couldn't be more wrong. I have six children and six grandchildren. If I wasn't afraid of what bad guards do to people who are going to get out one of these days, I'd rest easier that my children wouldn't be hurt by one of the damaged, shell-shocked and angry ex-prisoners.. My family IS the number one primary reason I spend my time 'vilifying guards', as you put it, because real 'correctional' officers want the same thing I want: to get rid of bad GUARDS who make their jobs more dangerous. C/Os are Professionals in uniform. Guards are criminals who should not be allowed to wear any uniform but maybe the 'convict stripes'.
Which one are you? Then we are on the same side, right?
Kay Lee
From: Mike
I was an officer for nine years, and I was not really interested in getting rid of bad guards, bad inmates, or anything else, I was interested in doing my shift, and staying out of trouble. I would say over 95% of corrections officers are primarily interested in what I stated were my primary interests. A bad officer, like a bad inmate, creates work and tension and even danger for everyone that must maintain contact with them.
I think you are a little harder on corrections officers than is fair. To expect an officer to put his neck out for the sake of cleaning up the bad employees of the institution is not a simple matter. It can involve more serious threat to officer's safety than any inmate can. I have seen more than one officer who was mentally unstable. It is unfair to expect an officer to place themselves in position of having no friends in the entire institution, and everyone knowing it. An officer in this situation is vulnerable to many types of coercion, and is vulnerable to physical assault. There are internal affairs officers whose job it is to take care of bad officers. Most good officers say to themselves - "let IA worry about cleaning up the jail- my job is to just not contribute to the corruption"- and I think that is a fair attitude.
Well, according to every body of prisoner law I've ever read, Mike - even the Florida DOC's - you have been perhaps unknowingly committing crimes under the color of law with your mere silence: It's not enough to do your eight and leave the gate.
Florida Statute 944.35

FACTOR 8: THE ARKANSAS PRISON BLOOD SCANDAL
Kelly Duda and Concrete Films have produced a documentary which details the corruption and greed that led the Arkansas Department of Correction to spread death from Arkansas prisons to the entire world. Hear the story from the mouths of those responsible for the harvesting of infected human blood plasma, and its sale to be made into medicines.
Duda's award-winning film unflinchingly documents the whole story the U.S. government and the state of Arkansas have tried to keep hidden from the world.
