CONCORD, N.H. -- Three inmates planted a homemade knife in Manuel Gehring's cell, causing him to be moved to a segregated unit, where hours later he committed suicide, authorities said yesterday.

No criminal charges will be brought, but the three will be disciplined by Merrimack County jail authorities, Senior Assistant Attorney General Simon Brown said.

Gehring, charged with killing his children -- Sarah, 14, and Philip, 11 -- used a bedsheet to strangle himself on Feb. 19 on his bed, hours after being transferred to solitary confinement.

The three inmates had personality conflicts with Gehring and planted the piece of sharpened steel where it would be found so Gehring would be moved from their unit, Brown said.

Authorities identified the three as Fred Temple, 19, of Warner; Henry Woods, 20, of Berlin; and Angus Anderson, 21, of Concord.

"These inmates are not being held responsible for Mr. Gehring's actions in taking his own life," Brown said. "In fact, one of the inmates has expressed remorse over what happened."

Initially, authorities said Gehring was moved to a segregated cell for violating rules.

Jail officers tried to revive Gehring when they found him.

Gehring, 44, was awaiting trial on charges he murdered his children last summer during a child-custody dispute with his ex-wife. He and the children disappeared from Concord after a Fourth of July fireworks show.

He was arrested in California a week later, alone, and, according to court documents, told police he had killed the children and buried them off Interstate 80 in the Midwest.

Their bodies have not been found.

FACTOR 8: THE ARKANSAS PRISON BLOOD SCANDAL

Kelly Duda and Concrete Films have produced a documentary which details the corruption and greed that led the Arkansas Department of Correction to spread death from Arkansas prisons to the entire world. Hear the story from the mouths of those responsible for the harvesting of infected human blood plasma, and its sale to be made into medicines.

Duda's award-winning film unflinchingly documents the whole story the U.S. government and the state of Arkansas have tried to keep hidden from the world.
