Laughter in the Alley
Listen now,
There’s laughter in the alley,
Between brick,
Giggles quick,
In the dirty walled valley
Of shadow,
No window,
No door enters in it’s dark,
Someone’s there
Passage rare,
From dirty street to worn park,
Listen now,
Quiet returns with a thud.
Dare I look,
To see whom made laughing sound,
That is gone,
That is done,
Will I find them on the ground,
Not about,
Or passed out,
Was it just a drunken fool,
Fears now lost
With conscience,
Mouth running rabid with drool,
Dare I look,
Will there be body in blood.
Why should I bother with discovery,
What difference could knowing mean to me
It’s only some stray laughter in the night,
Everything is just fine and all is right.
Listen now,
There’s crying in the alley.
Gloom
