Twilight Encounter
The sun hung on the low roof tops across the street
Only momentarily before dropping away,
Not really slowing and the horizon didn’t meet
But she came walking up toward me at the end of the day
Hold a broad rimmed hat that was no longer needed to shade
Gone the bright sun of summer now there was only neon.
It was not an appointment or plan I had made
I just happened to know what corner to be on
Because I’ve seen her walking this way before
From where ever to where ever she was going
And I wanted to catch a glimpse once more.
Her toes in the thin strapped sandals were painted red,
Her fingers were multi ringed and bracelets were plenty
But shadows covered face due to the down turn of her head
I wanted to say something clever or maybe slightly witty
But spoken words were jumbled deep in my brain,
And all I could mutter out softly was a greeting
When I wanted to ask her who she was and what was her name,
There was a brief smile as she walked slowly in passing
Beneath the streetlight that add a twinkle to her eye.
There was no turn to look back toward me
But her voice gave a sweet soft goodbye
Then turning a corner I couldn’t see
Slipping into the shadows of the night
I only saw her for a moment
But I’d be here next twilight
It was waiting well spent.
