Beating Isolation
by Cindy Clark

I’m bored. There’s no one to talk to. I can’t even go outside – it’s raining.

Do these complaints sound familiar? But it’s not what you might think. These refrains are not heard from the children but by their daycare provider!

Being the owner of your own home-based business can be a wonderful experience. But daycare can also be isolating if you let it. You are busy taking care of children all day, and your only adult contact may be when the parents drop off or pick up children. Then your five or ten minutes of conversation is usually about the kids.

If you know of any stay at home friends, great. But many providers don’t know other stay-at-home parents when they start their business. Take action so you won’t feel so isolated. Join your local daycare association to meet other providers and build friendships. You have a lot in common. Let others know you are available for phone calls during naptime.

If you are able, visit your local library or McDonald’s with the children. It’s surprising how many conversations are started when you have a group of children in tow. Likewise, visit your local parks. Oftentimes you’ll run into other stay-at-home parents and kids. Or ask your children’s teacher about other parents that might be at home and give them a call. They, too, might be looking for some company. The computer is a great way to converse with others doing daycare. Look up provider sites and you’ll soon be amazed at how fast time flies.

If you aren’t able to get out, then make it a priority to schedule time for yourself. Stimulate your brain with a hobby or read, plan activities or menus, scour the websites or magazines for ideas. Keep a journal or exercise. It’s okay to turn on the tv for some relaxation or inspiration. Just make sure it’s tuned to something that interests you and not a cartoon! Even watching other adults helps you feel like you still belong to the adult world.

You may be surprised at how fast the time goes and the day won’t seem so isolating after all.
