Construction Basket
Spray clothespins a variety of colors or soak them in liquid watercolors. Children will enjoy clipping them together to construct creatures or buildings.
Yarn Weaving
Give the children four or five balls of yarn to weave and play with.
Simple Braids
Tape three pieces of yarn to the back of a chair for the children to braid.
Playing Card Carpentry
Cut one inch slits in both sides of a deck of cards. Children connect and build with them by interlocking the slits.
Tweezers and Beans
Take a pair of tweezers, a small bottle with 1/2 opening, a plastic bowl and dried kidney beans. Place kidney beans in the bowl. Children pick up the beans with the tweezers and drop them into the bottle.
Pie Plate Hole Punching
Cover your work table with many layers of newspaper to form a thick padding. Invite the children to experiment with golf tees to pierce holes in the pie plates. Hold the plates up to the window to see how the sun shines through the holes. Hang your finished project in the window.
Extended:
Add black paint, colored cellophane, tape or glue for the children to experiment with..
Screen Embroidery
Window Screen Style
Cut a square of window screening. Wrap and tape a cardboard frame to the outside edges to eliminate any sharp edges.
Nylon Netting
Cut the center circle out of two paper plates so they look like wide doughnuts. Place a piece of netting over the hole of one paper plate. Nest the other plate on top of it and staple the netting in place.
Show the children how to create smooth patches of color by bringing the needle up and down through different holes. Give each child a frame and allow them to choose a section of yarn and a needle. Talk about safe needle use. Encourage older children to practice tying the end of the yarn.
