Blessing Mix for Thanksgiving- Submitted by Becce

Each ingredient in this snack mix symbolizes something associated with Thanksgiving.

2 cups Bugles brand corn snacks - shaped as a cornucopia, a horn of plenty.
2 cups pretzels - represent arms folded in thanks and prayer.
1 cup candy corn - during the first winter, the Pilgrims were each allotted only 5 kernels of corn per day because food was so scarce.
1 cup dried or candy fruits - Thanksgiving is the celebration of the harvest.
1 cup peanuts or sunflower seeds - seeds represent the potential of a bounteous harvest for the next season if they are planted and well tended.

In a large bowl mix all ingredients together. Other ingredients such as dry cereals, candies, or marshmallows can also be added. Make this mix as a family and eat while discussing each ingredient and how it relates to Thanksgiving.

Graham Cracker Turkeys- Submitted by Becce

Children should be supervised around hot ovens and kitchen appliances!

Note: As in all recipes, results can vary depending on humidity, conditions, etc. Please try any recipe out before attempting in a group setting.

1/4 cup unsweetened frozen apple juice concentrate, 1/4 cup vegetable oil, 1 sliced banana, 1 tsp. Vanilla, 1 tsp. Cinnamon, * 1 cup graham flour, 1 cup whole-wheat flour, 1 tsp. Baking soda, 1/2 tsp. Salt, Turkey shaped cookie cutter

* Graham Flour is a kind of flour, just like the more common wheat flour. If you can't find it in your supermarket, try calling health food stores.

Combine apple juice, oil, banana, vanilla, and cinnamon in a blender. In a large bowl, mix together graham flour, whole-wheat flour, baking soda, and salt. Add apple juice mixture to flour mixture and stir thoroughly. Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut out with turkey shaped cookie cutter. Use a fork to poke holes for eyes and feathers. Turkey Cookies- Submitted by Becce

Version #1

candy corn, Oreos, red hots, malted milk balls, chocolate frosting

Take the oreo cookie and twist it apart. Turn the side that has the white stuff on its back (that's the base of your turkey creation). Put a small dab of chocolate frosting in the middle of the white stuff and "glue" a malted milk ball to the base. Take some more frosting and "glue" the other half of the oreo to the back of the malted milk ball (this will be the base for the turkey feathers.

Using frosting to attach the pieces, assemble the turkey like this: Stack a second malted milk ball on the first, making the turkey's head. Then, attach candy corn in a fan pattern on the upright oreo half, creating a turkey's fanned tail. Last, attach a red hot on the front of the second (topmost) malted milk ball to resemble the turkey's "gobbler," as my mother so scientifically describes it. (The red hot is actually attached at a 90 degree angle, with a thin edge touching the face of the milk ball. You'll see how it needs to go on the bird when you're making it.)

Version #2

Open an Oreo cookie. Using chocolate frosting as glue, place the two halves at right angles, filling side inward. Put a malted milk ball between the halves, for the turkey's body. Place candy corn, spoke-like, on the inside of the upright cookie half, for the turkey's tail-feathers. Complete the turkey by attaching a cinnamon candy on the malted milk ball, as the turkey's snood.

Version #3

Seperate an Oreo cookie. (Yes, eat one too!) Spread chocolate frosting on the cream side of both cookies. Form Rice Krispie treats into an Oreo size ball. Stick Rice Krispie treat ball onto one half cookie. Stick other cookie half on the back end to resemble tail. Decorate with 4 candy corns pointed side inwards (tail feathers). Put blob of chocolate frosting on for head. Attach 1 candy corn (beak).

Version #4

12 pcs chocolate stars, 12 pcs caramel candy -- unwrapped, 12 pcs reduced fat fudge striped cookies, 12 pcs candy corn

To make each turkey, place chocolate star, pint side up, on work surface. Place one caramel candy on waxed paper. Microwave on high for five seconds, or just until slightly softened. Place softened caramel on tip of chocolate star, pressing down so they stick together. To make tail, press cookie, striped side facing forward, firmly against the sot caramel to stand upright. Press candy on top of caramel to resemble turkey's beak.

Version #5

Instead of the carmel I use a vanilla drop (I get them at Walmart in a package for $1) They are cone shaped and I use melted chocolate for the glue. Glue the flat part of the vanilla drop against the striped cookie. and using the star for feet with the point side up glue the body to the feet. I use the candy corn for the head on top of the vanilla drop.

Version #6

In the latest issue of Taste of Home's "Quick Cooking" is a simpler one. Make the standard rice cereal marshamall treat but with buttered hands roll it into 1 1/2 in. balls. Twist apart Oreo cookies; spread chocolate frosting on the inside. Place 28 cookies halves under cereal balls to form the base for each turkey. Place three pieces of candy corn together in a fan pattern on remaining cookie halves (leave the wide yellow part sticking over the edge of the cookie), then press each half onto a cereal ball to form the tail. Attach remaining candy corn with frosting to form turkey's head

Version #7

Striped shortbred cookies (tail), vanilla drops (candy- body), candy corn (head), chocolate stars (feet), chocoalte chips (melted in microwave to use as edible glue)

Dip top of star in melted chocolate chips, stick vanilla drop on top of star. Dip flat part of vanilla drop in chocolate chips and glue to tail (shortbred cookie). Put a dab of chocolate on one side of candy corn and stick on the body. I use a tooth pick dipped in chocoalte to make a face.
