BOOKS

A review of "Officer Buckle and Gloria" by ProMotion, Inc. said, "The book's art is done in bright colors with a bold line and different treatments. Their humor captures Gloria's perspective and gives readers that feeling kids love in a picture book--that they're in on the secret. Lots of little details in the illustrations add content and value to the story that may or may not be noticed on the first read."

Community Helpers Circle Idea
Police Officer The song "Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar" Pick one child to be the police officer. Provide him with an officers hat. The rest of the group will start singing "Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?" The officer will then walk over to one child and points to him. The accused child will say: "Who me?" The officer: "Yes you" The accused child: "Not Me" The officer: "Then Who?" Then the accused child becomes the officer and the game continues on. This circle activity worked quite well with quite a rowdy group of boys, they were very enthusiastic about this game.

Pass the Hat
This game is played just like Hot Potato, but instead of a potato use a police hat

CIRCLE/GROUP TIME
People We Know Actvity
to do while discussing "strangers" with young children... Clip magazine pictures of a variety of people. Take photographs of students and staff members -- to be photocopied or scanned into a computer and printed. Have children sort the pictures into two groups: "people we know" and "people we don't know". Write each of these headings on a separate piece of construction paper. Students glue pictures under appropriate headings.

I have a safety theme idea. I have taught this to other preschoolers. In regards to dialing "911". For those that don't yet recognize their numbers, put a red dot sticker on the umber nine and a green dot sticker on the number one. They will remember easier in case of emergency press "red, green, green"

Telephone Activity
Have a few phones in the class, and go over with the children what to say when the phone rings and the child answers. Teach them the proper and safe things to do, like: not giving their name, telling the person on the phone where they live, or if they are alone. You can even have each child come up to the phone , as you pretend to ring the phone & be the stranger. This is also a good time to go over dialing 911 in case of an emergency

FINGER PLAY

Police Officer Police officers are helpers wherever they may stand.
(Stand with feet apart, hands on hips.)
They tell us when to stop and go by holding up their hands.
(Signal stop by holding up hand and go by pointing index finger.)

Traffic Light Song

Red says stop ( hold up left hand in "stop" gesture )
Green says go. ( right arm motioning )
Yellow says wait. ( Hold up index finger )
You'd better go slow.
When I reach a crossing place (cross arms at wrist )
To the left and right I turn my face.
I walk, not run across the street. ( Use fingers )
And use my head to guide my feet. ( point to head and feet)

I'm a Police Officer

You're our friend, the traffic cop.

9-1-1

I like my seatbelt
Nice and snug.
Around my hips

So the driver will know
I'm buckled up and ready to go.

So we'll be safe and sound.

We like to travel in our car,

Whether we're going fast or slow,
So we'll all be safer while riding in our car!

Seat Belt Safety

Put the seatbelt cross your lap and
LISTEN FOR THE SNAP!

Oh my, oh my,
Just imagine your plight,
If you happened to be
A traffic light!

ART

Badges
We made badges out of aluminum foil.

Night Sticks
For your police day, have the students make a "nightstick" out of a paper towel tube. The students simply paint it black. You could also make a police badge by cutting out a tagboard badge shape and then covering the pattern with aluminum foil.

Traffic Lights
Make a traffic light out a shoebox and we make stop signs and put them on craft sticks and we make a road. Then we played red light green light. We had the children practice crossing the road and stopping at stop signs.

Safety Vests
Paper Grocery bag, bright paint, and reflective tape

Use a paper Grocery bag and cut it into a vest. Let children decorate with bright colorful paints then use reflective tape (which can be purchased at a hardware store) and let children put it on their vest. Explain that when light hits the tape it shines brightly. You can also remind them that it is just like the reflective tape on a firefighters jacket. Children can wear their vests during a safety walk or when they ride their trikes and bikes.

Police Cars
Cut large cardboard boxes to make squad cars. Take the boxes and spray paint them either blue or white. Emblems can be constructed for the sides.

******
SENSORY
Trucks:
Small toy fire trucks and police cars can be placed in the sensory table with sand.
From cookie dough or playdough cut out star shapes (police stars)

******
DRAMATIC PLAY
Provide play phones and a card with the 911 emergency number or the phone number for the local fire department. Let children act out calling the fire department to report a fire. Stress that they should only call if there is a real fire. Calling the fire department as a trick is very dangerous and foolish thing.
