5 Little Snowman Activity- Submitted by Lisa in VA

We took the poem "Five Little Snowmen" and made a manipulative. I typed out the five verses to the poem and cut out 5 snowmen from our Ellison machine for each child. They decorated the snowmen, glued them onto a long piece of paper, cut apart the poem and added them in order underneath each snowman. As we read the poem, they folded each snowman so you couldn't see it as it "melted away."

Here's the poem:

Five Little Snowmen

5 little snowmen standing in a row.
Each had a hat and a big red bow.
Out came the sun and shone all day.
1 little snowman melted away.
(continue until you have no snowmen left.)

"The Mitten" Activity- Submitted by Lisa in VA

When you read the book "The Mitten" use a white balloon while you're reading the story. Blow the balloon up little by little as each animal crawls inside. Then, when the mitten pops up from all the animals, let the balloon go whizzing around the room. The kids love it!

*****

"Katy and the Big Snow" Activity- Submitted by Lisa in VA

We read Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton (it's a long book) then each child completed the sentence (by writing), "During the winter I like to ________."

*****

Another "The Mitten" Activity- Submitted by Lisa in VA

-We read two versions of The Mitten (one by Jan Brett, one by Alvin Tresselt) and the children made symmetrical pairs of mittens. We put them on a bulletin board and the children had to find the matching pairs.

Dressing for Winter Poem Submitted by Christi

This is how we dress on a cold Winter's day.
We put on our snowsuits to go out to play.
Then we put on our boots for walking in the snow.
Next, our hats and our mittens.
'Cause the wind begins to blow.
And now we're all ready to go out and play.
We'll stay nice and warm on this cold Winter day.

Snow Riddles- Submitted by Lisa in VA

I have six sides
And I fall from the sky.
I land on your nose,
I land on your eye.
Can you guess what name have I?

Round balls of snow
And a funny-looking hat,
A broomstick and a carrot
And some buttons that are black.
What can you make from all of that?

I travel through the snow
And you sit on me.
I make a lot of noise,
And on the bottom there are skis.
What is the name that you call me?

You can sit on me
And slide in the snow,
Or someone can pull you
Wherever you go.
What is the name that I want you to know?

10 little mittens hanging on the line...
one went away, and then there were nine

9 little mittens near the gate...

5 little mittens very near the door...
one went away, and then there were four.

4 little mitten hanging froma tree...

one went away, and then there were two.

2 little mittens drying in the sun...

Winter "S" Words- Submitted by Sherry

There are a number of fun "s" words associated with winter. Look through a winter magazine or storybook with your child and have her look for objects that start with the "s" sound. Examples: Snow, Snowmen, Snowflake, Sled, Skates, Sledding and Skating.

*****

Hot And Cold- Submitted by Sherry

January is a great time to emphasize the difference between hot and cold with your child. You can make hot cocoa and cold cocoa. Let your child decide which one he likes the best. When you go outside, you can talk about how "cold" it is. When you are riding in the car with the heater on, you can talk about how "hot" it is. If you like in a warm climate, I am sure you can find other appropriate examples for your child.

*****

Winter Story Cards- Submitted by Sherry

To make this game, you will need twelve 3x5-index cards, some scissors, glue and an old Winter magazine. Cut and glue pictures of winter objects on the cards. Examples: A snowflake, a mitten, a white bunny, a reindeer, a sled, a snowman, etc. You can add ordinary objects also, such as; a tent, a car, a toaster, a book. When you are finished making the twelve cards, mix them up and turn them upside-down. Have your child choose three or four cards, and make up a short story using the cards. Another way to play the game is to take turns with your child drawing a card and incorporate the object into a shared story.

What Things Come In Pairs?- Submitted by Sherry

Ask your children to think of items that come in pairs. Make a list of their responses. Here are some suggestions: mittens, gloves, socks, shoes, boots, sandals, skates, shoelaces, and earrings.

*****

Mitten Puppet- Submitted by Sherry

Find an old mitten to use as a puppet base. Glue or sew on a pompom nose and eyes, a felt mouth, and yarn hair. If you wish, add other details, using scraps of fabric, rickrack, or lace. Use the puppet when singing songs or reciting rhymes, such as "Three Little Kittens."

*****

Smallest To Largest- Submitted by Sherry

Cut several snow people shapes of assorted sizes out of white poster board or felt. Decorate the shapes as desired. Give the shapes to your children and invite them to line up the snow people on a table or a flannel board from smallest to largest or from largest to smallest.

*****

"The Mitten" Activities- Submitted by Sherry

I cut two pieces of felt into the shape of a mitten. I put Velcro around the sides and left the top open. The children counted how many plastic animals fit in the mitten before it burst open. We recorded how many animals fit in the mitten for each person in the group.

*****

More Mitten Activities- Submitted by Sherry

Make a huge white mitten out of white fleece. Stuff animals or puppets of each animal and put them in the mitten as you tell the story. Once the mouse tickles the bears nose, stand up and throw all the animals in the air. (as the bear sneezes)

*****

Another Mitten Activity- Submitted by Sherry

We did the Mitten today and used a smallish white parachute as the mitten. It was fun and hilarious. All the characters could get under it easily and we only had to discuss how to keep from getting too blown up with the Bear's sneeze.

*****

Five Round Snowballs- Submitted by Sherry

Cut five snowball shapes out of white felt and place them on a flannelboard. Read the following rhyme to your children, removing one snowball at the end of each verse. At the end of the rhyme, ask the children what they think the little boy did with the last snowball. Five round snowballs piled in a heap,
One rolled to the bottom where it wasn't so steep.
Four round snowballs make a smaller mound,
One was scared to be so high and rolled to the ground.

Three round snowballs in a little pile,
One rolled down the hill for a mile.
Two round snowballs sitting all alone,
A little boy picked it up and took it home.

*****

The Hiding Hat- Submitted by Sherry

Place five to ten small items or toys on a tray. Show your children the tray of items and your special "Hiding Hat." Have them look closely at the items. Ask them to cover their eyes while you put the Hiding Hat over one of the items. When they open their eyes, have them guess which item the hat is hiding. Whoever guesses correctly gets to have the next turn hiding an item.

*****

Snowflakes Rhyme- Submitted by Sherry

Snowflakes, snowflakes,
Dance around (Dance fingers)
Snowflakes, snowflakes
Touch the ground.
(Touch floor)

Snowflakes, snowflakes
In the air.
(Dance fingers upward)
Snowflakes, snowflakes,
Everywhere.

Snow Language Idea- Submitted by Sherry

Find a falling snow paperweight (or snowglobe). Let your children manipulate the paperweight as you tell a story about the scene inside it.

*****

Why Mittens?- Submitted by Sherry

Discuss with students why people wear mittens. Ask them to brain storm a list of other winter clothing that protects people from the cold. Then try this hands-on experience. In advance, prepare a tray of ice cubes and gather a few pairs of real mittens. Working with a few children at a time, hand each child an ice cube: first in bare hands, then while she is wearing a pair of mittens. Ask her to describe the difference in the way her hands felt while holding the ice with and without the mittens. After all the children have participated in the ice-cube activity, teach them this song about the purpose of mittens.

Inside a Mitten- Submitted by Cindy

The Mitten, adapted and illustrated by Jan Bret, will inspire your little ones to participate in this circle activity. After sharing the story, have children sit in a circle on a rug. Review the animals in the order that they appear in the story. Place a large blanket in the center of the circle to represent the mitten and sing the song below as youngsters role-play climbing into the mitten.

(sung to the tune of "The Farmer in the Dell")

The mitten on the ground
The mitten on the ground.
Heigh-ho! It's cold outside.
The mitten on the ground.

The [mole] snuggles in.
The [mole] snuggles in.
Heigh-ho! It's cold outside.
The [mole] snuggles in.

As the last student role-plays the mouse, have all the students pretend to sneeze and fall out of the mitten.
