2x36W Compact Fluorescent

DIY retrofit project

This page shows the steps I went thru to retrofit a friends lighting system from 2x15W to 2x36W using a compact fluorescent kit from Aquarium Hobbyist Supply (aka A.H. Supply)

Quick facts on this project:

One of the two original hoods with the plastic cover removed.

Quick visual as to actual height of fixtures (about 2").

Beginning to gut out original 15W T8 fixtures.

Cutting wiring to 15W bracket.

Gutted fixture leaving just the wire and switch intact.

Just a visual to show you COULD put in two lamps into each hood if you wanted.

These go on a 55W acrylic tank and use two side by side, so they are not very long.

Removing the mounts for the plastic screws that hold the clear cover in place.

Drilling holes thru reflector and plastic fixture.

For these fixtures I needed #6 machine screws (not included in kit). I found some nice black ones to match the hood.

Mounting the ballast into one of the hoods.

Ballast all wired up to the 120Vac input.

Same view but back a little showing wiring and ballast.

Getting ready to install the jumpers into the lamp socket.

Note: I tend to cut my jumpers a tad short, you may want to allow more length where the insulation is.

My length snugs right in close. You might have a bit more loop outside if you play it safe and make your jumpers a bit longer.

Close up of machine screw, then reflector, lamp clip, then lock washer and nut.

Nearly complete fixtures without lamps in place yet or plastic covers reinstalled.

FLAME TEST! Lamps installed and works great.

Fixtures with plastic covers reinstalled with new long machine screws. Note: the reflectors had to be bent a tiny bit wider (flatter) to allow the plastic covers.
