Rei Ayanami - First Child

Rei Ayanami was the first to be chosen to pilot an Evangelion (Unit 00) meaning she's the First Child. Rei trained to become a pilot before the Eva Development project began. Aged only 14 years, she has suffered serious injuries from various Angel attacks. Rei, being a girl of few words, has problems expressing her emotions and only has a strong relationship with Gendo Ikari who is like a father to her. Being with him since she was young, her feelings for him are strong. Rei is a complicated character and wants to find out the meaning of her existance.

Asuka Langley Sohryu - Second Child

The second person to be chosen to pilot an Eva was Asuka Langley Sohryu, the Second Child, aged 14. She has also gone under special training, just like Rei, but in Germany. She is intelligent but has a vain personality. Asuka hates to lose at anything and shows off her piloting skills. We learn more about Asuka's childhood, it was an unhappy one at that as her mother killed herself in trauma. Her inside feelings are quite the same as Shinji's; lonely Shinji starts to rely on Asuka even more when shes recovering in hospital (REBIRTH), he feels lonely and is afraid of Misato and Rei. The only person he knows that can make him feel better is Asuka..

Shinji's mother had died when he was at a very young age, he's father, Gendo Ikari, had left Shinji to form NERV. A 14 year old boy who had no parents, began to become so independent, it got harder for Shinji to develope close relationships with anyone else. Shinji is the main character from the series and goes through the most difficult situations. Not seeing his father for 10 years, he was called unexpectedly to NERV headquarters, only to find a new life waiting for him to pilot an Eva in the fight against the Angels. Even though he might seem calm when piloting an Evangelion, he can instantly become so emotional with rage that Unit 01 goes out of control. The only relationship he's had that ever meant a lot to him was with Kaworu Nagisa, but it tragically ended when his secret was revealed. But Shinji still loved him even after his death.

Shinji Ikari -  Third Child

Touji Suzuhara - Fourth Child

When Touji  first met Shinji, he punched Shinji for hurting his younger sister when Shinji was involved in his first battle against an Angel. Later on we see them both become very good friends. Touji is found to be the fourth child and is given an Evangelion to pilot. An Angel took over Touji's Eva so Rei, Asuka and Shinji were ordered to destroy it. He was hurt badly, losing an arm and a leg.
