Five Verses
The most outstanding enthusiasts for hearing the scriptures are those whose minds are
overwhelmed with the sweet taste of the moods of Lord Krishna, who have nothing but love
for him (or – free from any disaffection towards him) and who find no pleasure in the
world and the Vedas. 1
The middle order of enthusiasts for hearing, consists of those whose hearts have
softened and who are, in addition, excited at the least remembrance of the blessed Lord
and are absorbed entirely in the meaning. 2
Some people know the true nature of Krushna with certainty and that He is everything,
everywhere, and yet, are wounded by his love only in moments when He enters within them or
constrains them, and at no other times. Only
at times do they fully attain their goals through whole-hearted love, not always. Some of them, too, are attached to persons and
things. They are said to be the lowest class
of enthusiasts. 3-4
Those mortals, whose minds are concerned with nothing else, whether of place, time,
material objects, agent, sacred utterance, or action, they are the best on the path of
“Hearing”, and so forth. 5
