The Lost Utilities

To Convert MS Project plans
into
Project Workbench Plans

As a Project Management and Project Planning Professional as well as an expert user and trainer of PWB 4.03, I have found MS Project Conversion tools to be in high demand. Unfortunately, they are all but disappearing from the world. And now that Niku Inc. (http://www.niku.com/) has purchased ABT, support for older versions of PWB will no doubt dwindle further.

Until Now. They are also still available at the personal site of Paul Maxwell, the author, at http://paulmaxwell.cassys.biz/.

In honor of those great utilities, I present them here as a psuedo mirror so they might always be available. They are all free utilities, but keep in mind that support for them may not exist anymore.

This utility will create a Master Project in Fix format with subproject links to the ACA files in the same directory. Sort of a merge. But you still need to tailor the Link ID.

A utility that takes an MPX file and creates a FIX file for PWB to read. (I didn't test this much but the supplied demo MPX doesn't work)

This is a more robust conversion program that takes an MPX file and creates a FIX file for PWB to read. Just make sure that the date format in MSP does not display the day of the week. Just mm/dd/yy. (tested)

This utility apparently calculates an earned value based on completed tasks within a summary level. I've been meaning to test this but haven't had the correct version. It does not work on PWB 4.0 or later.

This is/was provided by the Microsoft Project Site (I think) and while it does work, it handles dependencies differently, and consequently task dates move (in some cases, radically). I never dared to try it on a plan with actuals already in it, and since the task date conversion wasn't 100%, I never pushed it. I just use it as a task converter only.

I have spent much time and effort in working with an effort log (time entry) front end written in MS Access. It writes directly to the Pending Actuals and Pending Estimates fields in a PWB Fix file. However, I cannot post it here as it is still considered Proprietary by my company. If you have seen RM5's ABT Team / Connect, you know what this is capable of. Multi user, Time tracking and reporting on a single period basis.

I will post more utilities here as I get them. If you know of a good utility related to MS Project or ABT (now Niku Inc.) Workbench, contact me below, and I will post it here. Even may give you credit!
