Portland Wrestling's "Rumble In The Crater, August 13, 2005 | |||||||||
(Steve Strout) | |||||||||
Pro Wrestling In The Know finally made it to cover a Portland Wrestling show, and what a show it was!! The show took place on August 13, 2005 in Keizer, Oregon, at the Keizer Volcanoes stadium, which was a nice ballpark, and good place for a wrestling event...The only problem was the distance between the fans and the ring, which kind of made it tough to totally get into the matches, though all the matches were excellent. The event featured legends "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka and "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, and a steel cage main event match for the Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Title, pitting Dr. Luther defending against an opponent of Roddy Pipers choice. Originally, He was supposed to defend the title against NWA champ Raven, but NWA-TNA pulled Raven off the show because of travel issues due to the TNA pay-per-view the following night. Therefore, the P.W. promoters left the decision of who Dr. Luther would face , up to Roddy Piper, who is also a member of the P.W. board of directors...More on that match later. The show kicked off with a young promising wrestler named Caden Matthews, who I hadn't had the chance to see wrestle up to this point, defeat the veteran Moondog Moretti by submission...In a special challenge match Skag Rollins defeated northwest legend Matt Borne, who worked the match as Doink the Clown, after Psydsho ran in and took out Doink with a chair shot while the ref was distracted...In a brutal "Falls Count Anywhere" match Team Hell, Exile & Damon Scythe, Defeated the Cartel ,Vinnie Massaro & Big Ugly, after putting both Cartel member through tables and scoring the pinfall...The next match was a $5000 bounty match, with "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka defeating another wrestling veteran, the Grappler. Snuka looked great and still works a hell of a match, and even had enough in him after a hard fought victory, to fight off Team Hell. Afterwards, "Superfly" thanks all the fans for being so supportive during his days in Portland...The next match was scheduled to see the SPW California Champ Bonzai Bruce defend against Dante in a ladder match, but Dante was pulled due to a concussion. Dante was replaced by Jeremy Blanchard, so it was Blanchard vs. Bruce. The match was off to a slow start, until Dante who against doctors orders joined the match anyways, making it a 3 way ladder match, with Dante pulling out the victory. New SPW champ, Dante, who was awesome to watch, and I cant wait to see him in action again...Northwest star Scotty Mac and his tag team partner, Aaron Idol, became the new Pacific Northwest Tag Team Champs after defeatng the Dark Carnival, Buzz Anderson and Psydsho, with the Ringmaster in their corner...then we went to an intermission so the crew could set up the cage for the main event... Once we got back underway, Piper came out for his segment, and got a huge pop from the crowd. Piper talked about his love for Portland and its fans, and cracked jokes on some wrestlers in the locker room, especially Skag Rolling, who took exception to his comments. Rollins came out and demanded to be put in the cage match for the PNW title, but Piper had other ideas. Piper called out everyone in the locker room to participate in a steel cage battle royal where the last 2 wrestlers not eliminated by pinfall, would finish the match one on one for the title. It was a wild scene with all the bodies in the cage, till it got down to the last 2 competitors. Dr. Luther and Skag Rollins, who by the end , were both bloodied. This was an exciting match with Luther retaining his title in a hard fought battle...What an awesome way to end an exciting night of wrestling. The show was being taped for TV I believe, and I hope to find me a copy of this event to watch over and over!!! |
