A COLT NAMED TWIN
On a farm outside a small town, lived a Father, Mother, two boys and two girls. They had horses, cows, turkeys, chickens, pigs, guineas and a dog. The second boy named Jimmy had a cripple leg. He had operation after operation without success. So he had to have special shoes made for him so that he could walk.
One
day, a colt was born to the family. A
“freak of nature” the grownups called it.
The colt had one short leg. The
Father was going to have the colt put to sleep; but Jimmy begged his Father for
the colt. He consented to give Jimmy
the colt; but he gave Jimmy charge of caring for the colt. Jimmy named him “Twin.”
Twin
grew under Jimmy’s care and soon he was riding Twin all around. On day, Jimmy was riding when Twin stepped
in a hole and fell. Jimmy got off just
in time! Father wanted to put Twin to
sleep; but once again, Jimmy begged for Twin’s life. He and Father doctored Twin and put splints on his led. They also made him a sling from the rafters
of the barn to keep Twin’s weight off his leg until he got able to stand on his
injured leg.
Time went by and Twin got
stronger and stronger and soon he would be able to stand on his leg. One day, Jimmy was dressing; and was about
to put on his special shoe when he got an idea. He finished dressing and ran to the barn. “Father, Father, a special shoe!” Jimmy
shouted. Father didn’t understand at
first. Jimmy explained, “I have a
special shoe so I can walk. Why can’t
we make Twin a special shoe?” Jimmy asked.
So,
Father and Jimmy went to their blacksmith and asked him to make a special shoe
for Twin. The blacksmith made a fine
one. Now you can see Jimmy and Twin in
the pasture day after day riding smoothly, even if they can’t fly like the
wind!
