Native Americans

I am a Native American with mixed blood, hardly accepted by either side. A mixture of blood. A throwback that did not look like the rest of my family who were fair of skin and had dark brown or black hair and eyes which looked gray-green mixed with brown around the iris. I had black hair and eyes and a dark skin which was almost a burnt brown when I was in the sun in the summer months.

Always I felt out of place. Once a young spanish boy asked me, "I know what you are; but what are they?" speaking of my brothers and sister. I had no answer, so I pushed him into the water at the swimming pool! But in searching my roots I hope to be able to connect with all my ancestors and maybe not feel so alone and different!

On Daddy's side he was Apache (don't know which sub-tribe) on his daddy's side; and Souix (think Lakota) and Blackfoot on his mother's side. On my mother's side she was Chickasaw and Cherokee. Tracing these lines has been difficult as most of mixed blood in my Grandma's day were not acknowledged or accepted so they would not talk about it. I hope to be able someday to trace the one's who would not talk about my origins as if it was a horrible thing.

I have attended the pow-wow's and find it almost the same on the Native American side. If you can not tell them which tribe or sub-tribe you came from, then they also look funny at you and make you feel left out! I really wish I could fit in somewhere!!!
