MASTITIS
(Massage Therapy)



GENERAL EXPLANATION:

Mastitis is an inflammatory condition caused by bacterial infection in the mammary glands and often occurs during the lactation period in primipara. It is usually caused by infection in the ruptured nipple, obstruction or breast milk, and condensed accumulation of stagnant breast milk. The main manifestations are nodular mass, red color, swelling and pain in the breast, unsmooth milk ejection, subaxillary lymphadeneclasis and is usually accompanied by fever, topical suppuration, and throbbing pain after a long period of time, At the beginning of mastitis, massage therapy functions to dredge the lactation collateral’s, promote the evacuation of stagnant milk, and relive topical pain.

NOTES:

1. It is necessary to pay attention to hygiene during the lactation period and feed the breast milk in time so as to avoid the accumulation of breast milk.
2. It is advisable to rub and wash the nipple and breast with warm water (or 75% alcohol) every day after pregnancy for 5 months which prevents infection.
3. It is necessary to seek other therapies if mastitis has suppurated.

TREATMENT:

1. Knead the sick breast with hot towel for 5 minutes.

2. Press Rugen(ST-18) and Rupang, and push and chafe Zhangmen(LR-13) and Qimen(LR-14) for 30 seconds each.

3. Hold the sick nipple covered with a place of clean gauze with the left band and pinch and knead it lightly for more than 10 times in order to dilate the lactiferous ducts in the nipple.

4. Put the four fingers of the right hand on the mass of the breast and hold the breast up with the left hand, pushing and kneading the breast mass gently inwards toward the nipple until the mass and nodule become soft. Then, push the breast horizontally from the border of the breast to the nipple so as to improve stagnation of the lactiferous ducts and release the breast milk.

5. Take 150 grams of onion (or coriander) and decoct it in water to obtain the herbal juice and steam and wash the sick breast with it. Then, take a wooden comb to dip in the onion juice (or coriander juice) and comb the breast from the bottom of the breast to the nipple.

6. Grasp Jianjing(GB-21) and Hegu(LI-4), and knead Dazhui(DU-14) 30 to 50 times each if fever is accompanied.
