Quake! Capture The Flag

Frag_Garden CTF Server

This page is about Capture The Flag, a Quake Server team modification written by Threewave. Downloads for CTF version 3.01 and 4.0 are included. (Release dates were 96-11-22 for version 3.01; and 97-04-15 for version 4) Other Quake utilities are available below.

Page start date:   03-12-2000
Goal: To have a good CTF server and to host Quake on a high speed connection somewhere until I die.

News: 7-27-00 My lease ends soon and it looks like I'll be fortunate enough to get a house. Sadly, I must leave my superfast ethernet connection that pipes into a couple of T3 lines. Don't be discouraged. I love Quake CTF and I hope to have a server up and running somewhere again. Being in the computer industry I should be able to accomplish this. At this point I can only speculate, but perhaps in one year I can get something going again. Not sure about this, however. Expect to see a server popping up bearing the name Frag_Garden again someday. I plan on leaving this page here indefinitely as long as Geocities will host it.

What is capture the flag? CTF is a modification made to the game of Quake (www.idsoftware.com) in which all players belong to a team and work toward the common goal of capturing the flag. Original versions had a red and blue team. More recently other colors have been employed including purple and yellow. CTF is the most fun form of Quake I have found.

Capture The Flag (by Threewave, formerly www.threewave.com) can be served in two main forms. The original form used quake maps that came with the game and in the place of the flags were keys. The gold key and silver keys were used as flags. The nice thing about this form of play was that anyone with unmodified Quake could play this game. The best addition to ever come to Quake came with this mod, it was the grappling hook.

Just a few months later, Threewave (Zoid) released CTF with some custom maps and customized objects. These new quake maps created excellent CTF arenas and were better suited for team play. The drawback, however, was that without these special maps and models, you couldn't play. Without this mod, Quake would either crash out or drop to a console. One might see an error such as progs/star.mdl not found.

Though most players seem to enjoy the special CTF maps more, I plan on hosting the old fashioned kind primarily, and perhaps the day will come when I can host a second server that runs the custom levels. So come and join the frag festivities.

I plan on using the Frag_Garden name for my server(s) in times to come, though the IP address will change. Hopefully, this page will stay here and updates can be posted.

If you are here to download the client side files for special CTF maps, the files you need are: ctf301.zip and ctf40.zip. These are played on many servers, including the ctf1 erols server I listed above. If you want to setup a server, it can be confusing. You'll need the 3wave30.zip file and qc_106.zip will come in handy. For help installing, read the readme.txt files that are zipped within the files. It took me a while, but I figured it out from nothing but reading and trial & error.

Tip: If you open the qc source files from 3wave30.zip with notepad they have some garbled letters. If you open these files with edit.com save them and close them, you can reopen them with notepad and they should look fine. This tidbit comes from one of those text files. I think they were made in unix and that causes the funky characters.

Quake Files: Maps and Utilities
URL Size Description
CTF 3.0 No File To play in an original 3.0 version of CTF, no client files are needed.
3wave30.zip 408 KB Server side files to setup Threewave Capture The Flag. Contains map entity file information needed to place flags into original maps as well as some Quake C source code files that when compiled together with qcc.exe (ID's Quake C compiler) make progs.dat which holds settings, weapon, and player rules. Works for any version, whether your server runs with custom models or special models is determined by teamplay setting. (Example: Teamplay 1467 is CTF with native stuff) Quake utilities with qcc will be needed. Dobsp.bat will be used to merge flag position info into bsp maps. To run custom maps on a server, first must install client side files.
ctf301.zip 3.89 MB Client side files for Threewave Capture The Flag version 3.01. Contains special flag model, grappling hook model, and maps ctf1 through ctf8. Expands to 9.25 MB.
ctf40.zip 6.41 MB Client side files for Threewave Capture The Flag version 4.0. Contains different rune sounds, and maps ctfstart, and ctf2m1 through ctf2m8. Expands to 14.5 MB.
quakepatch_101to106.zip 3.54 KB Updates Quake version 1.01 to version 1.06. Mostly some minor bugfixes.
winquake.zip 336 KB Quake executable native to Windows environment. Supports some higher graphics modes and can see the Windows TCP/IP stack without the help of quakeudp.dll.
fixsigsegv.zip 41.4 KB Replaces quakeudp.dll to hopefully fix sigsev crash errors caused by some Quake error with the Windows 95 TCP/IP driver stack.
winpak.zip 121 KB Quake pak file viewer for Windows. Can extract files from pak file and can compile new pak files.
cyberdemon.zip 512 KB A remake of a Doom level invovling the CyberDemon. Quake level add-on. The map is star shaped if I remember correctly.
qc_106.zip 426 KB Qcc.exe Quake C compiler and source code for progs.dat file. Use this to compile all those .qc files into a progs.dat file. The progs.src declares what files will be included and compiled into progs.dat.
qbsp_dos.zip 336 KB Deals with map (.bsp) files. Needed along with the 3wave30.zip files in order to hack the map files and insert the ent data into the bsp files. (Extract the bsp files from the pak files with winpak) If I remember correctly, Dobsp.bat calls on Qbsp.exe to do its thing.
quakeme2.zip 192 KB Quake model viewer. Can be used to grab player and monster stills.
Alien Quake ~15 MB A cool Quake conversion project based on James Cameron's "Aliens" movie. Included maps of LV-426, The Nostromo, and several others. Used sounds sampled from the movie, had pulse rifle, grenade launcher, and tracking device. Alien images were copied from movie stills and pasted onto existing monsters. Project was shut down in 1996 or 1997 by the movie company when they learned of it. (That sucks!!!) Files might be available upon request.
