NOTICIAS BUENOS AYRES HERALD - Miércoles 13 de Febrero de 1889 Irish Immigrants: A large and influential meeting of English, Irish and Scotch residents in Buenos Aires was held yesterday at Messrs. Samuel B. Hale & Co’s office to consider what steps should be taken to assist the Irish immigratis who will arrive here shortly in the German steamer Dresden. Mr John Drysdale was in the chair. Mr Gartland, the owner of large estancias near Bahía Blanca, offered to take charge of all the immigrants, and to form with them an Irish colony on a large area of land about four leagues from Bahía Blanca, and he undertook to allot to the head of each family 25 squares, or say 100 acres, of land suitable for cultivation, and allow 15 years for payment of the agreed price. He also said that he would establish a large store in the Colony and give every family credit for goods to the amount of $1.000. Mr. Drysdale said it would be better to wait for a few days before deciding on anything definite, and after a long discussion it was resolved to form a committee, consisting of Messrs Edward Casey, John Drysdale, and F Mulhall , to receive and consider any proposals that might be in reference to the immigrants and to submit the same to a general meeting which will be held within two days after their arrival. A sub-committee consisting of the Municipal Intendant, Fathers Constantine and Gaughren, and Messrs Dinneen and David Methven, was also named to look after the immigrants and to see that they are properly treated in the Hotel. These two committees will meet every day until final arrangements have been made. It was also resolved to form an Association to assist all English speaking immigrants in establishing themselves in the country, and a large number of those present at once agreed to become members of the Association. |
