My friends are not immune to mondegreens either, it would seem. All of these mondegreens are things my friends have had:
Song: Purple Haze
Artist: The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Album: Are You Experienced
Real lyric: "Excuse me while I kiss the sky"
Mishearing: "Excuse me while I kiss this guy"
Comments: My bass teacher, Mark, had this one. He tells me that for him, it was accompanied with a mental image of Jimi Hendrix leaning over and kissing some guy, and the other guy looking over and looking really confused. Apparently this is a fairly common mondegreen.
Song: Death on Two Legs
Artist: Queen
Album: A Night at the Opera
Real lyric: "You're a sewer-rat decaying in a cesspool of pride"
Mishearing: "You're a sewer-rat decaying in a cesspool opera"
Comments: One of my friends, Nikki (who also really loves Queen) heard the song that way. It conjures up an unpleasant image when I think of it. (Oddly enough, the album features an opera song in it, Bohemian Rhapsody).
Song: Now I'm Here
Artist: Queen
Album: Sheer Heart Attack
Real lyric: "Many a tear lives on in my eye"
Mishearing: "Many a tear lives on in Rhye"
Comments: Another one courtesy of Nikki. This time she thought the line was referring to Rhye, the fantasy country where a lot of early Queen songs take place, and how there was still a war going on there (as referenced in the song Lily of the Valley, which can also be found on that same album).
Song: Every Breath You Take
Artist: The Police
Album: Synchronicity
Real lyric: "And my poor heart aches"
Mishearing: "I'm a pool-hall ace"
Comments: I was showing this site to my Uncle Eric (who was not at that time aware that it was mine). He was trying to find this mondegreen to see if they had it. Then I explained that it was my site and that I had never heard it that way. He found that somewhat humorous. I am not sure whether or not he knows that this mondegreen is on the internet now.
