Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V): Woah! This thing is like, what, 13 minutes long or something? Eh, who cares...This used to be my favorite Pink Floyd song. Which means it's quite good. It's one of the most relaxing songs I know. I take it back; it's the most relaxing song I know. When I first heard it, in fact, I began rocking back and forth to it (which is what I do when I'm very relaxed for some reason). Except I stopped, because I knew my mum would come in and want to know what I was doing. The song is about Syd Barrett. Actually, all the songs on this album are in some way about him. (In fact, that's why it's S-hine On Y-ou Crazy D-iamond.) There's a lot I could say about this song...let's leave it at this - it's really good.
Welcome to the Machine: I get a cold feeling whenever I listen to this, as though somebody is really welcoming me to the machine. It's pretty much about the music "industry" and how they're taking the personal effect from music (which is why it's a "machine", as opposed to something personal). How this relates to Syd Barrett I have no idea. But I guess it has to in some way. The whole album is basically a concept album about him.
Have a Cigar: You know, for some reason, this reminds me of "Money". You know, that song from Dark Side of the Moon? I tell my friends you can't dance to Pink Floyd. But I guess you can, if it's this song. The subject matter covers again the music "industry", but more specific this time, because it's about all the things the people who run the industry say to get you to work with them. Basically a bunch of cliches that nobody really means. (No, don't ask me how this relates to Syd Barrett! I don't know!)
Wish You Were Here: This...aw, man, this is just beautiful. Seriously. This song...it fills me with a wave of emotion whenever I hear it. I don't know what it is...kind of like sadness, but a little different. Especially the part where he sings "How I wish you were here". I - I want to have a moment of silence right now. Especially since this is the day Syd died. *moment of respectful silence*
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX): It's not as long as the first one. And it's not as relaxing, either. Actually, maybe it's not supposed to be relaxing. Actually, it builds a feeling of apprehension whenever I hear it. Perhaps this is what they wanted. Whatever the case, I am still able to suitably space out to it (which is always a good thing...or not...) This part's lyrics seem to be even more un-understandable, though. I also like the part at the end, where it switches to the major key. That makes the ending seem less bad, in a way...I don't know, this is just a really good closer for this album. And I guess there you have it.
Best tracks: Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V) and Wish You Were Here.
