The Pacifier (on DVD)

What Is It?

Vin Diesel heads up the cast in his first comedy. (OK, some of you have been laughing at his movies for some time now, but this is the first one where he meant it.)

Here he plays Navy Seal Shane Wolf . Wolf was on a mission when the developer of a super technology, is killed. With the technology still missing, and still wanted by international spies, Wolf is assigned to protect the inventor's children. When the nanny quits, he finds himself doing a lot more than protect as he steps into parenting.

How Was It?

What are you supposed to do with a Pacifier?

.....That's right, and that's what this film does from beginning to end.

This film is just flat. The opening action is supposed to suck you in and give you something to compare to his later domestic role. Unfortunately all it does is make you wish you were watching one of those action films that are exciting. Still, it does prepare you quite nicely for a dull, predictable film that was apparently edited by poorly trained monkeys. (Good try Mr. Greenbury)

If you are not paying attention, the fact that the film is so formulaic, trite and predictable, may confuse you into thinking things are happening for a reason.

This is just a poor re-harsh of wildly OK movies like Daddy Day Care and Cheaper By The Dozen.

The best part of the movie is when the girl scout style troop, now trained by Navy Seal Wolf, beat the snot out of a bunch of bullying cub scouts....

Is It Good For Kids?

....it's probably not a great thing for kids to watch a girl scout style troop solve there problems by beating the snot out of a bunch of bullying boys.

There is also an adult bully played by Brad Garrett of "Everyone Loves Raymond." He pick's on Wolf and the kids Wolf is taking care of. Finally that problem is also solved by violence, when Wolf is challenged to a wrestling match. He not only beats the guy up in front of all the school kids, he insults and humiliated the man as he does it.

There is also some distasteful language.

You can check www.ScreenIt.com for a complete break down of elements shown on the screen.

How about Spiritual Issues?

The Christian ideal of "Turn the other cheek" could have been utilized, but is thrown aside.

Other than that, characters we are supposed to like misuse God's name.

When Wolf is "wrestling" there is a kid in the stands holding up a "John 3:16" sign. The boy is later seen cheering for Wolf as he hurts and humiliates.

What Is Your Recommendation?

All in all, there is nothing to recommend on any level, this might be a good night to just read a book.

...and what was with the duck?
